The meaning of
Ayurveda

The word Ayurveda is a composition of two words deriving from Sanskrit. The Sanskrit word “ayur” means “life” and “veda means knowledge. Ayurveda is hence defined as the knowledge of life and is also seen as a philosophy of life. Ayurveda takes a holistic approach. The focus is not just on treating symptoms of the disease. Instead, people are viewed here as a whole.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a whole-body and holistic system of medicine and a philosophy of life with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent, with its beginnings dating back 3,000 years ago. Like neighbouring India, Steeped in rich Buddhist history, Sri Lanka is one of the best places to enjoy an authentic Ayurveda retreat, boasting a longstanding history of Ayurvedic and Yoga practice.

Ayurveda uses a range of techniques to treat illness and encourage wellbeing, following a professional medical check-up in your retreat. Our Ayurveda and Wellness Retreats are personalised to assist you with your very personal health discomfort.

  • A retreat is a relaxing getaway to focus on your well-being. Unplug for a while, connect with nature, indulge in wellness treatments, yoga and meditation and fantastic and healthy Ayurvedic food according to the doctor's recommendation. Retreats are a wonderful way to rest and rejuvenate.

Our retreats are professional, high-quality and designated Ayurvedic Retreats in Sri Lanka, set in stunning nature. Throughout your stay you are supported by professional Ayurveda doctors.

  • Ayurveda is based on the idea that each person has certain life forces (doshas) and everything in the universe is connected. An imbalance in 1 area can affect another. When the imbalance is not fixed, disease and illness can occur. Ayurveda mostly uses nutrition, lifestyle changes, and natural treatments. These are used to support balance and a return to health. Ayurveda is very focused on overall health. But it may use specific treatments for some diseases.

  • Ayurvedic treatment is informed by the understanding that everything in the universe is composed of five elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements combine in the human body to form three life forces (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) known as Doshas, which determine the functioning of the human body. Each individual inherits a unique mix of these three Doshas, with one usually being predominant, and it is believed that health issues are experienced due to an imbalance of the Doshas.

    Ayurvedic treatments are meant to:

    • Support the body in removing toxins and impurities

    • Reduce symptoms

    • Increase disease resistance

    • Reduce stress

    • Create more harmony and balance in life

The treatments during your stay are based on the doctor's recommendation following the initial consultation.

Treatments may include the following, amongst others:

    • Full body massages

    • Oil massages with liquid oil on forehead

    • Herbal bathes

    • Yoga sessions

    • Meditation sessions

    • Music therapy

  • According to Ayurvedic teachings, everything in the world can be attributed to three different “energies”, also called doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Ayurveda says we are all born with a unique combination of these doshas and the relationship between the doshas varies from person to person. It is the aim to balance the doshas.

mind, body and soul.

We want you to immerse yourself in the culture, learn from locals, taste the food, smell the air, sip the drinks and the hidden gems of every country and of every place with your local guide who knows best. We are not visitors - we live and breathe a culture.

For each trip to all of our offered itineraries, we have decided to travel in small groups of minimum 2 travellers (plus a host) and maximum 7 travellers (plus one host). Some of the small group trips are even smaller, please see all country pages. This allows us to be present for you, and you to be part of a group as opposed to be part of an anonymous tour. Also, the idea of a small group is much more accessible for locals than larger groups.
