Welcome to Marrakech! Salam Aleikum!
Welcome to Morocco! Your trip with us starts here. Over the next 9 days, you will experience Morocco from a local perspective, deep dive into this intriguing culture and find nooks and crannies that only a local knows. After you have arrived at the Marrakech Menara Airport, a driver or our host will pick you up there and whisk you to our accommodation for the next three days. We have chosen a lovely boutique Riad for you, where you are welcomed by our host. Leave your luggage in your room, enjoy some mint tea, and the Riad atmosphere while decompressing from your travels.
If your arrival is early, we take you on a small walking tour of the area in which the Riad is located, until we wait for all travellers to arrive. Get a first glimpse into Marrakech’s vibrant colours and familiarize yourself with the area. We will visit the famous big square, Jma al Fna, where you will find more of the humming energy and the intoxicating sounds and smells that surround Marrakech. Once all travellers have arrived, we gather for our first dinner, our Welcome Dinner, at a nearby restaurant. While getting to know each other, we share a meal of local dishes and a drink to toast to this trip we are embarking on together.
Included: accommodation in a Riad, tea, dinner, drink -
Marrakech
After a restful night and a rich and colourful Moroccan breakfast in the Riad, you meet your host at 10 am for a walking sightseeing tour through Marrakech. We will visit local artisans, gaining appreciation for their unique craftsmanship that we will see in the places we are about to visit and hearing their stories. We visit the magnificent Palais Bahia, with its artful marble tiles, beautifully crafted mosaics and arabesques made of stucco. Enjoy the fantastical atmosphere the Palais exudes, which already had Hollywood inspired to shoot films here. We continue our walking tour through the old historical Medina where you witness genuine local Moroccan life happening around you. Embrace the dazzle, as we go and see the local residents have their bread baked fresh everyday, and also the Hammams, where the neighbourhood residents go to bathe, catch up with friends, and to relax. After touring the neighborhoods, we will rest our feet and reminisce a bit in a lovely local restaurant that serves Moroccan fusion for our lunch. We head out again into the maze of narrow streets and magical souks, following its cobblestone streets, as we continue our tour in the Medina, and visit Madrasa Ben Youssef, an old Koranic school.Upon the end of our visit here, we return to the Riad around 5PM. Enjoy some alone time, recharge and give your feet a rest. Later, we will gather again to go to a restaurant for another Moroccan feast for dinner. And of course, we have set aside plenty of time for shopping in the souk and for visiting galleries.

What to know about Morocco:
-
Use your right hand
In local Moroccan culture, the left hand is traditionally considered unclean. It is therefore considered respectful to use your right hand, especially when you greet, accept and hand over items or eat when not cutlery.Greeting
Say hello and greet Moroccans by saying "Salam Alaikum" and a handshake when meeting them for the first time.
Drinking and offering tea
Tea Culture in Morocco is a friendly symbol of hospitality. It is customary for Moroccans to offer Moroccan tea ("Maghrebi mint tea" or simply "Moroccan mint tea“) to guests as a welcoming gesture. The tea is usually a blend of green tea, fresh mint leaves, and some sugar. Accepting tea is also seen as a sign of respect and appreciation and it is delicious and fresh so we highly recommend it.Religion
Please show respect for religious customs and traditions. Islam is the predominant religion in Morocco. We kindly ask you to be mindful of prayer times and etiquette when visiting religious sites. Also, some shops and attractions are closed on Fridays, as Fridays are a holy day across the country. Please also dress appropriate when entering religious sites. -
The Moroccan dirham (DH) is the official monetary currency of Morocco.
Cash or card? We recommend both.
Cards are widely accepted in larger cities, however, in rural areas, smaller stores, and markets, it is advisable to carry and pay in cash. Be sure to carry a sufficient amount for the day. ATMs in touristy places may run out of cash if used frequently. -
Please respectfully dress modestly, particularly in more conservative areas and dress appropriately when entering religious sites. For women, it's advisable to carry a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders when visiting religious sites, and cover up wrists and ankles for visiting mosques.
Please show respect for religious customs and traditions. Islam is the predominant religion in Morocco. We kindly ask you to be mindful of prayer times and etiquette when visiting religious sites.
We will be visiting the Sahara desert, which will have lower temperatures. Pack a nice warm jumper for that, too.
-
In general, Morocco has a tropical climate, with temperatures reaching as high as 40°C during the peak summer months and as low as 5°C in the Sahara desert. The coast has a warm, Mediterranean climate tempered on the eastern coast by southwest trade winds whilst inland areas have a hotter, drier, continental climate.
Morocco is a pleasant destination all-year around, getting plenty of sunshine – it is therefore a wonderful Western winter escape. The summer months of July and August are the hottest with temperatures nearing and around 40 degrees, while January and February are the coldest months.
